After helping Ellsworth capture a state tennis championship last season, Reygan Coonrod enters her final season with plenty of motivation — and an appreciation for the teammates who helped make the previous year special.

Coonrod finished last season with a 34-1 record and captured the Class 3-2-1A No. 1 doubles state championship. She also helped Ellsworth win the team state championship, adding regional titles in both doubles and team competition.

Now, with one final season ahead, Coonrod is focused on enjoying every moment with her teammates.

“I’m most excited for one more year getting to play with my teammates,” Coonrod said. “We have made so many traditions together, from car karaoke after a meet, going out to eat together, and line dancing during practice. I will miss these people when I leave and will savor my final season and make it the best one yet.”

Coonrod and her teammates understand what it took to reach the top last season. Rather than relying on the momentum of their championship, the team continued to put in work during the offseason.

“Our state championship was a team effort,” Coonrod said. “We all knew how amazing it felt to be able to accomplish something that had been so many years in the making and that came from our dedication to the tennis program.”

The Bluebirds regularly practiced together during the offseason, using one another to improve and prepare for another run at a championship.

“Our team would regularly go out and hit around with each other and we pushed each other during the off-season so we would be ready to give it our all again this season,” Coonrod said.

While Coonrod has already experienced significant success, she has identified one area she wants to improve during her final season: confidence.

“It’s always something any athlete can improve on and I knew I needed to work on trusting myself more to make me a better athlete,” Coonrod said.

Coonrod also wants to maintain a positive attitude, particularly when matches become difficult.

“Staying confident on the court and keeping a smile on my face are the best ways for me to grow as a player and to be a role model for the underclassmen on our team,” she said.

One of Coonrod’s biggest adjustments this season will come in doubles. After playing with Inarie Rippert throughout her high school career, Coonrod is now teaming with Makenna Anderson, who was also part of last year’s state championship team.

“I hope to be able to be successful with a new partner this season,” Coonrod said. “Inarie Rippert has been my partner for all of high school so far, so it can be hard to adjust to playing with someone else.”

Coonrod and Anderson had not previously played doubles together before this season, but the new partnership has gotten off to a strong start.

“Currently, I am playing with Makenna Anderson, who was a part of the state championship team last year,” Coonrod said. “We haven’t played together as doubles before this season, but we are off to a strong start, and I’m excited to see how we improve the rest of the upcoming season.”
